Starry night over the Rhône (detail)

Golden lights stretch downward across dark blue water, connecting the distant riverbank to the foreground. Stars punctuate the upper sky, while small figures near the lower edge give the broad night scene a human scale. The horizontal shore and vertical reflections create different rhythms, held together by closely worked passages of blue and yellow.

Van Gogh painted Starry night over the Rhône in oil in 1888; the canvas belongs to the Musée d’Orsay. This wider art print presents a detail and is distinct from the later Starry night with its cypress and village. In a living room, the river’s reflections can provide a clear evening focus, especially against a plain wall where the small gold accents remain visible.
