Creation of Adam (detail)

Adam reclines along the earth while reaching toward a figure carried within a flowing mantle. The nearly meeting hands create a narrow interval that concentrates the action, while the larger bodies give the gesture physical weight. This crop reduces the surrounding fresco and draws attention to the exchange across the open space.

Michelangelo's Creation of Adam forms part of the Sistine Chapel ceiling's scenes from Genesis. The Vatican Museums identifies the encounter as the transmission of life from the Creator to humanity. This art print presents a detail of the ceiling composition, with strongly modeled figures that make a clear focal point in a study or living room with quiet, spacious surroundings.
