Moonlight

A pale moon casts a narrow golden reflection across blue water, framed by dark tree trunks near the edges. The light shoreline curves across the lower part of the scene, interrupting the vertical rhythm of trees and reflection. Broad, simplified areas replace small natural details, making the relationship between land, water and evening light especially clear.

Painted in oil in 1895, Moonlight is held by Norway’s National Museum and depicts the coastal landscape associated with Åsgårdstrand. Unlike several related Munch compositions, this scene contains no human figure. The art print brings a contemplative seascape to a bedroom, where soft blue textiles and gentle lighting can extend its subdued palette while leaving the golden reflection as the central point of attention.
