Spring ploughing

A pale horse and a darker companion pull a plough through angled furrows, approaching the foreground as the farmer follows behind. The broad white body stands against purple earth and green fields, creating a clear center of weight. Across the distance, lighter strips of land and small trees balance the darker, closely worked ground.

Munch painted Spring ploughing in oil in 1916, during the period when agricultural work became an important subject at Ekely. The picture is held by MUNCH in Oslo and treats the working animals as active presences within the landscape. In a dining room, this art print can connect warm timber with green or earthy textiles, offering a rural scene whose energy comes from the movement of the horses and the repeated lines of the soil.
