Sunflowers

Two cut sunflower heads rest against a blue-toned ground, their curled petals and dense centers given close attention. The flowers are separated from an upright vase arrangement, making the exposed heads and stems the principal subject. Warm yellows and browns stand against the cooler setting, while directional marks distinguish the surfaces of petals, seeds and ground.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds this 1887 oil painting from Van Gogh’s Paris sunflower studies. It should be distinguished from his later bouquets in vases, whose upright forms create a different composition. In a dining room, this art print offers a compact study of color and organic structure, with natural timber and plain textiles giving the irregular flower heads room to remain clearly legible.
